Kyocera Corporation
Manufacturing, Industrial and Commercial Facilities
This cogeneration plant, operated for Kyocera America’s headquarters and manufacturing facility, is one of 28 such plants constructed by A.O. Reed, but included a solar electricity generation system as well. A.O. Reed served as both the prime and mechanical contractor. The cogeneration plant consists of four natural gas-fired Caterpillar lean-burn engines, producing 3.2 megawatts of electricity, plus a heat recovery system that produces chilled water for air-conditioning through the use of two 450-ton absorption chillers. A 100,000 gallon underground chilled water storage tank serves dual purposes of thermal storage and a reservoir for fighting fires. Part of the assignment was to convert equipment in Kyocera’s existing DX HVAC system to a chilled water system. This project also called for installing a rooftop 50 kilowatt solar energy system. built and supplied by Kyocera, consisting of flat-plate photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight directly into electricity.
