Children’s Hospital Tower
Hospitals and Laboratories
This 24,000 sq. ft. project is a prime contract that included the demolition of an existing four engine cogeneration system, jacket water heat exchangers, absorption and electric chillers, cooling towers and associated auxiliary equipment. The existing 2-story Clinical laboratory building was structurally upgraded for installation for four new cooling towers and condenser water pumps, and to meet current seismic codes. The roof of the adjacent cogeneration building was removed for installation of a new 3.5 turbine engine generator system and the structure modified to support a new high temperature hot water heat recovery boiler, two stand-by boilers, auxiliary equipment, and to meet current seismic codes. The project also included installation of 2 new 700 ton absorption chillers, new medical air compressors, vacuum pumps and medical gas systems. New electrical switchgear was installed to accommodate the increased system capacity. The cogeneration system was installed for parallel operation and “island mode” operation. All work had to be accomplished while the hospital facilities were occupied and in full operation.
City of Hope National Medical Center
Hospitals and Laboratories
217 bed hospital, 84 beds dedicated to bone marrow transplant patients. We provided the Underground Steam & Chilled Water Distribution System. Excavation over one mile trenches through high traffic areas of campus, installed over five miles of piping, twelve miles of conduit, over 30 manholes & vaults; built half mile of roadway, street repair. Installed a 5,000 linear foot utility corridor containing chilled, steam, and 12 KVA electrical distribution in an existing 75-year old campus to feed utilities to 20 structures. Extreme difficulties due to existing underground piping, changes in elevation and requirement to maintain proper grades on piping systems. Existing monumental and memorial structures had to be maintained and properly stored to protect from trenching operations. Continuous and uninterrupted service to the hospital complex was maintained while the improvements were being constructed.
