Healthpeak - Exact Sciences
Located in Torrey Pines, the biotech cluster in San Diego, California, the Healthpeak Exact Sciences project is split as an office and laboratory building. This 50,000 square-foot design assist project awarded the mechanical and plumbing scopes to A.O. Reed & Co.
On the HVAC side, A.O. Reed provided new lab air control systems. These systems consisted of two rooftop units with humidity control, VAV systems, Phoenix valves (to serve fume hoods), and new heating hot water systems. These complex systems require expertise and knowledge to ensure the best results. A challenge the A.O. Reed team overcame during this project was to provide a temporary propane heating solution when the permanent solution was delayed due to design changes. Our team expanded their thinking to assist with creative procurement of the equipment to bring in lead times. According to Ben Horak, Project Engineer from Align Builders, “A.O. Reed recognized the challenges to overcome. They provided quick problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking to get things done. A.O. Reed’s team executed every step of the way. Big examples are existing RTU quick solution, temporary propane, and Daikin RTU parts sourcing that really stood out to the Exact Sciences head of construction.” A.O. Reed’s team seamlessly provided quick solutions to face challenges within the construction process. A.O. Reed also updated the existing office mechanical with a new VRV system. As for the plumbing, our team provided new compressed air and industrial water systems to serve lab spaces. We also updated existing core restrooms.
This project is one for the books at A.O. Reed. We got to show off our knowledge and experienced field team to a new general contractor on the project. Due to the great efforts of our team, Align Builders, the general contractors in the first phase, awarded us the second phase as a design assist partner. The Healthpeak Exact Sciences project is more than just a laboratory and office building. This building will house new findings and solutions in cancer research. Our team is proud to construct a building that will host infinite findings and possibilities.
