Engineering & Interdisciplinary Sciences

This 81,300 square-foot project constructed a three-story building on San Diego State University’s campus. The project is built to expand the science and engineering departments at the university. Collectively, the science and engineering teams will research and investigate new findings using state-of-the-art equipment. A.O. Reed was awarded the mechanical and plumbing scopes as a best value, design-build partner to the team.

This laboratory and educational building included complex mechanical and plumbing systems. The mechanical scope included the installation of chilled water from the campus loop. Heating hot water boilers and pumps were installed on the roof. A.O. Reed installed lab exhaust and custom air handlers on the rooftop to feed the phoenix valves at each zone. The mechanical systems included 3 air handling units, 17 fan coils, 153 phoenix valves, 10 exhaust fans, 28 fan-powered filters, 24 F/S dampers, and 466 pcs of air distribution.

The plumbing scope installed standard plumbing systems in the restroom. This included CW, HW, W, and V piping. Lab and process systems included ICW, IHW, IW, and IV. We also installed lab compressed air, lab vacuum, nitrogen, and deionized water. Overall, the piping system included 3 water-to-water heat exchangers, 2 shell and tube heat exchangers, 10 pumps, and steam and condensate.

The San Diego State Engineering and Interdisciplinary Science building took 18 months to construct. The project achieved LEED gold status. A.O. Reed became a valued design-build partner. Our team provided crucial project information and constructability input to the team. The Engineering and Interdisciplinary Science center provides a space to investigate and implement new findings within the science and engineering fields. The project is set to expand and further develop the science and engineering departments at San Diego State University. Now, the students and faculty have a place to test theories and implement important findings. The project was completed on March 10th, 2020.
