Foundation Medicine
Ten years ago, San Diego was known for their beaches. Now, San Diego is a rising life science hub. With over 1,200 life science industries located in San Diego, Foundation Medicine decided to join the trend. The idea was to have one centrally located office in Torrey Pines with over 80,000 square feet of laboratory and office spaces. With the new office space and state-of-the-art equipment, advances in Foundation Medicine’s research and development are to be expected.
A.O. Reed has constructed many reputable labs throughout San Diego. Our team consisted of top players in the industry who specialize in laboratory construction. Our general foreman and foreman’s average years of experience is over 25 years. Collectively, we gathered a well-versed team to implement the best techniques and technologies to construct a suitable laboratory building. As a design-assist partner, we were able to renovate the existing core and shell with ease and efficiency. Being upfront with constructability logistics in the beginning lead us to have an easy installation process. This three-story lab and office multi-functional building provides Foundation Medicine’s team with the technologies and tools to create innovative findings and research. Foundation Medicine’s purpose is to provide treatments to patients suffering from advanced cancer.
The Foundation Medicine office in San Diego remodeled the existing shell building. All shell equipment was reused except two exhaust fans, VAVs (SA & EA), and Venturi air valves for the lab spaces. All three trades plumbing, piping, and sheet metal were included in this project. The plumbing scope included lab gases, compressed dry air, vacuum air, domestic cold water, and condensate. The steam serves the humidifiers located on the roof. The domestic cold water and drain waste vent systems serve all lab fixtures and janitor closets. Our piping team conducted a heating hot water tie-in to the existing heating hot water plant. This serves the new VAVs with reheat coils. The refrigerant system serves 3 split systems located in the server rooms. Our team added a chilled water CRAC unit at the level two server room. The scope also included the chilled water tie-in to the level two mechanical room. The ductwork included a tie-in to the supply exhaust mains at the existing drops to each floor. All offices are served by VAVs with reheat coils and labs are served by Accutrol.
By providing these systems to the laboratory and office building, the Foundation Medicine team can progress in their findings and research. The new laboratory space is set to expand the testing capacity of the company’s FoundationOne Liquid CDx. Research and development of other products are set to be in place. By providing the necessary critical systems, A.O. Reed is happy to do our part in building a great project.
