A.O. Reed takes on a wide range of projects, from laboratory facilities to high-rise buildings. Our work spans everything from straightforward equipment replacements to the construction of large-scale campuses. A key factor in our success is the expertise of our skilled craftsmen. Every system is meticulously planned and coordinated through our BIM department, ensuring seamless integration. These models are then transferred to our fabrication shop, where materials and systems are precisely crafted and delivered to the jobsite on schedule. We continually evaluate our processes to reduce installation time and enhance safety. Our seasoned general foremen and superintendents perform thorough quality control checks on all installed systems. At A.O. Reed, we are committed to building every project the right way—efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards. Our teams, located in San Diego, Anaheim, and Los Angeles, are the driving force behind the “Quality Behind the Name.”

BIM at A.O. Reed

BIM

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a foundational element of our Lean Construction methodology, enabling data-driven decision-making and streamlined project delivery. We utilize BIM throughout the pre-construction and design phases to support real-time model integration, enhancing interdisciplinary coordination, mitigating design conflicts, and reducing the volume of RFIs. BIM's 3D modeling capabilities allow for detailed visualization of design intent, facilitating clash detection and constructability reviews. This process significantly improves design efficiency, accelerates coordination with consultants and trade partners, and contributes to optimized scheduling and cost control.

Fabrication

Since the late 1960s, A.O. Reed’s sheet metal, plumbing, process, and pipe fitting divisions have been integral to the successful execution of our projects. We consistently leverage prefabrication techniques for ductwork, process, piping, and plumbing systems to enhance efficiency and precision. Fabrication at our shops can significantly reduce on-site installation durations, adhere to compressed construction schedules, and streamline field operations. By utilizing our in-house fabrication facilities, we can minimize material waste, mitigate safety risks, enhance quality control, and deliver measurable cost savings to our clients.

Pipe Lean Construction

Lean Construction

A.O. Reed has fully embraced lean construction principles across our plumbing, process, pipe fitting, and sheet metal fabrication shops. By integrating lean technologies and workflows, we have achieved notable gains in efficiency, reduced cycle times, improved safety, and enhanced overall productivity. This systematic approach minimizes waste and streamlines processes, resulting in lower costs and faster, more reliable project delivery.

We combine advanced HVAC cost analysis with the latest technologies to optimize system performance on every project. We also provide comprehensive maintenance plans to sustain system efficiency long after installation. Our expertise encompasses delivering commercial plumbing solutions, including conventional systems, as well as specialized medical gas and high-purity laboratory installations. We take pride in our contributions to numerous LEED Silver, Gold, and Platinum certified projects, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and quality.

Quality Control

Quality control begins during the BIM phase, where our team ensures that all installations are clash-free, constructible, and accessible for future service. During this stage, we meticulously review the models to identify and resolve any issues early on. These finalized models are then used in the fabrication process, allowing us to prefabricate as much as possible in our shop. This approach significantly reduces installation time, minimizes material waste, saves costs, and ensures the delivery of a high-quality system.

During the construction phase, we follow a comprehensive submittal process. Prefabricated materials are delivered to the jobsite just in time for installation, aligning with project plans and specifications. We conduct quality control walks alongside general foremen and superintendents to monitor and verify installation quality, ensuring both performance standards and design requirements are met. At A.O. Reed, our commitment is to deliver every project the right way—on time, on spec, and with excellence.

Commissioning at A.O. Reed

Commissioning

Our dedicated commissioning team works closely with designers and construction teams to ensure every system is fully functional and ready for operation. Reporting directly to A.O. Reed’s Project Manager, the commissioning team also serves as the primary point of contact with the general contractor, ensuring smooth communication and coordination.

A successful project depends on consistent attention to building systems throughout every stage. That’s why our team reviews all shop drawings prior to installation, with a sharp focus on the placement of valves, balancing dampers, control devices, and equipment, ensuring compliance with service access requirements.

We streamline the commissioning process by utilizing a dedicated software platform for start-up and commissioning. All necessary documentation, including start-up forms, is securely stored and easily accessible. If a third-party commissioning agent is involved, our team is fully equipped to integrate with their preferred software to maintain continuity and collaboration.

Safety in Construction

Safety

At A.O. Reed, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a core value. Our comprehensive safety program is built on prevention, education, and accountability. A dedicated safety panel continuously evaluates and updates our practices to ensure they remain current and effective. Nearly 90 of our project managers and field supervisors are OSHA 30 certified, and we actively provide OSHA 30 and other essential jobsite training for our team members.

Our goal is to build Southern California’s best projects while protecting every individual on-site. With decades of experience on safety committees, our superintendents bring the latest safety innovations directly to the field. Weekly toolbox meetings, proactive safety monitoring, and rapid communication of any jobsite concerns help us maintain a safe work environment. From minor incidents to major concerns, we document and analyze every detail to learn and improve. Above all, our mission is simple: to ensure every employee returns home safely each day.

“When I brainstorm and find a new process to install the mechanical system, leadership listens and implements when necessary. When I’m told they like my idea, it encourages me to get involved and bring more to the table. This is a fun, collaborative process rather than following precedent.”
