Lilly Biotechnology Center

Located in the biocluster of San Diego, the Lilly Biotechnology Center project constructed a 256,000 square-foot four story building. This building hosts research laboratories and offices focusing on affordable cures for Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, immunology, obesity, and pain. A.O. Reed was brought on board as a design assist mechanical contractor responsible for the HVAC and plumbing scopes of the project.

Our team installed independent exhaust fans and HEPA filters to support the radioisotope rooms. In the electrical rooms, we installed ductless split systems. Some equipment included on the project was VFDs, pumps, air separators, exhaust fans, air handlers, lined plenums, HHW Boilers, steam boilers, tanks, and laminar flow diffusers. The piping on the project includes the CHW, CDW, and HHW piping. We also included chiller refrigerant relief, steam feedwater, steam blowdown, and steam and steam vent piping.

A.O. Reed provided water heaters that are located in the janitor closets next to the restrooms on the first floor. Following the client’s request, our team installed the plumbing work five feet outside of the building. Our team performed a domestic cold water tie-in at a point approved by the city. On the project, we also included a water filtration system for laboratory use. A.O. Reed installed various laboratory and restroom fixtures including countertops, cage washers, sinks, and ice makers. We also installed lab air compressors and vacuum pumps. A.O. Reed installed various lab gas systems for current requirements and future.

The Lilly Biotechnology Center was a project that put our plumbing, piping, and sheet metal team to the test. A.O. Reed’s team completed construction on-time and within budget. Over the years, A.O. Reed has taken great pride in our involvement on the project. The Lilly Biotechnology Center was completed in 2017.
