Apprenticeships

Since opening A.O. Reed’s doors, we have been able to train plumbers, pipe fitters, and sheet metal apprentices through the local unions. This opportunity has allowed us to grow our presence amongst the union community and mold future employees. Apprentices are recruited through the union, word of mouth, the military helmets to hard hats, and other programs.

Apprentices are an integral part of the crew. Many apprentices either work in the field or at the fabrication shops. From there, they will understand the jobsite training and learn the skills to be a great tradesman. During the five-year program, plumbers/pipe fitters learn common tool knowledge and safety. These individuals also learn math and drawings, rigging, welding, soldering, gas system sizing, waste and vent system sizing, medical gas system sizing, water system sizing, and code classes. On the jobsite, they move material, install hangers, pipe, test systems, solder and braze copper, and sometimes weld steel pipe. As for the sheet metal apprentices, they also complete a five-year program. A.O. Reed teaches apprentices to install in the field, detail, weld, and fabricate in the shop. From there, our team analyzes what the apprentice excels in and offers the necessary career path. This apprenticeship program is designed to perform all the duties of a journeyman.

All of our current jobs have apprentices learning from the crew. According to our superintendents, an ideal candidate is someone who has a good attitude, works hard, is willing to learn, and follows directions. Finding someone who is self-motivated and wants to learn the trade is also crucial. The apprentice program is great for introducing a prospective tradesman to the area of study. At A.O. Reed, an individual will gain experience in the field and shop.

The apprentice program is through the sheet metal and plumbers/pipe fitters unions. The unions provide training centers and instructors to teach apprentices on-the-job training. Being able to work in the industry, developing your skills, and attending school while being compensated a nice living.

A.O. Reed makes an effort to recognize hard-working employees. Our company promotes within the organization. Countless individuals have started their careers apprenticing at A.O. Reed and are now general foremen, superintendents, and vice presidents. Our mechanical contracting company has infinite opportunities for those with a great work ethic, enact our core values, and lead a team for success.
