Pier 6 Replacement

The Pier 6 Replacement project is located on the San Diego Navy Base. The project entails the reconstruction of a single-deck berthing pier needed to support Pacific fleet ships that are home-ported on the base. This design-build replacement project allows the Navy to utilize an updated pier to serve many modern ships.

This project replaced the existing pier, measuring 60 feet wide by 1,377 feet long, totaling 82,620 square feet. The new pier measures 120 feet wide by 1,500 feet long, totaling 180,000 square feet of space. This project more than doubles the original port by size and capacity. The new deck will have a 2.5-foot ledge around the pier parameter and provide docking stations for multiple berthed ships. Due to our long history with the client, we understand the Navy’s design requirements and utilize our previous experience on this project. Also, the new pier will meet a 75-year service life.

The new structure consists of pre-stressed concrete piles to support a concrete superstructure. The design also requires a load-out ramp to cradle on each side of the new pier extending from the quay wall. We accomplished the client’s request by adding a new pumped sewer ejection pit. We also replaced the 10” forced sewer main. Special features of this project include a new sewer pumping system and storm drain filtration unit. The filtration plant takes the stormwater from the pier deck, cleans the water, and returns to the ocean. The sewer pumping station receives the ship’s discharge while docked at the port. The waste is sent from the base facility plant to the city sewer plant. A.O. Reed installed a new 15” gravity sewer main. We also installed a new sewer line at the sewer pumping station. On the project, our team rowed out in boats to get to the barge to install a storm drain under the pier.

Overall, A.O. Reed installed new 8” sewer lines for the ship discharge and constructed the fire/freshwater mains. We will also install 10” x 6” HDPE oily waste lines. A 14” storm under the pier drain line was constructed for deck draining. These lines are located in a concrete trench within the pier structure. From there, the new site pumping station will be added at the foot of the pier to collect ship discharge. The project scope includes a guard station with restroom facilities.

A.O. Reed enjoys having repeated work with the Navy. We are proud to showcase our team of dedicated pipe fitters to accomplish the job in a cost-effective and efficient way. Throughout the San Diego Navy Base, we are starting to see the modernized ports provide a better tool for the Navy. On the project, our team enjoyed rowing out and working on the barge below the pier. This was a great experience, and our team was adaptable to all changes! The project was completed at the end of August 2023.
