Palomar Health Rehabilitation Institute
At the Palomar Hospital in Escondido, many new buildings are being added to the area. One of the structures included was the Palomar Rehabilitation Hospital and was completed on March 26, 2021. This 56,852 square-foot plan and spec project transformed a once busy parking lot to a highly accredited rehabilitation hospital. The building consisted of a two-story specialty hospital and long-term acute care rehabilitation facility. A.O. Reed was awarded the project’s HVAC and plumbing scopes.
The plumbing scope included the installment of (3) water heaters with circ pumps, (1) domestic water booster pump, (1) water softener, (1) 1,250-gallon grease interceptor, and (1) medical vacuum pump. The plumbing piping systems include sanitary waste & vent, storm drain, domestic hot & cold water, and medical vacuum piping as well as an oxygen piping system that is fed from bottles.
Mechanically, the project consisted of (3) air handling units, (1) make-up air unit, (3) split systems, (12) exhaust fans, (2) air cooled chillers, (3) heating hot water boilers, (5) HHW pumps, (3) CHW pumps, and (1) buffer tank. New ductwork, hydronic piping, and refrigerant piping was installed to support the VAV systems for the project.
This project constructed a brain injury unit, in-room dialysis, and large multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums with state-of-the-art therapeutic technologies. The gymnasiums include an augmented reality balance training, therapy bionics, and a full body exoskeleton. This 52-bed facility provides private rooms for all patients.
Palomar Health Rehabilitation Institute focuses on the treatment and care of patients who have suffered loss of function due to injury or illness. The institute has highly accredited programs focused on neuro, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and amputation. This facility functions as an inpatient rehabilitation center, but also operates as long-term acute care hospital. Thanks to A.O. Reed’s contributions and dedication on the project, we are giving the medical staff the tools to provide the necessary care for the recovering patients.
