UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center, Phase 1

UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center is undergoing a 15-year plan to revitalize its campus for future success. The first phase started in November 2021 and will be completed by July 2025. The UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center Phase I project constructed a new 251,000-square-foot outpatient facility, including four stories above ground and two below ground. This design-assist project also constructed a 10-level parking structure providing 1,850 stalls. A 9,000-square-foot central utilities plant to support the outpatient facility is also included in the first phase.

The new outpatient facility will increase access to UC San Diego’s nationally-ranked medical specialties and patient care. This new pavilion will house specialty clinical programs such as advanced imaging, audiology, breast health, digestive diseases, maternal & fetal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, radiation oncology, urology, vascular surgery, outpatient surgery center, and an infusion center. To focus on the cancer care program, this will provide double capacity for infusion therapy. The new facility will have operating rooms, procedure suites, exam rooms, and a pharmacy.

On the mechanical scope of the project, we installed 5 air handling units generating approximately 300,000 cfm. We also installed VRF systems, exhaust fans, VAV terminal units, Bracky Therapy, LINAC, PetCT, CTAlpha, MRIs with Quench Vent, Steam System, Chillers, Heat Recovery Chillers, and Cooling Towers.

The plumbing scope of the project installed water closets, lavatories, sinks, clinical sinks, a medical gas system, natural gas, domestic water heaters with storage tanks, sand oil interceptors, a fuel fill station for the generators, and electric water heaters. A.O. Reed implements a unique process when installing copper pipe racks, allowing us to install 25,000 square feet of pipe. This will include all water and medical gas piping.

UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center’s master plan is to have updated resources and a larger capacity when providing medical care to the growing San Diego population. Incorporating more medical staff, surgeons, and specialty clinics will allow easier access to healthcare for the surrounding community. The mission for the project is to “deliver a premier academic health campus and lifelong wellness destination with locally focused amenities that enhance community prosperity and well-being, maximize the site’s amazing views, and leverage the beauty of the natural environment.” A.O. Reed is proud to have constructed the first phase of the project. The estimated completion date for the first phase of the UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center will be July 2025.
