A.O. Reed’s Record-Breaking Ductwork

A.O. Reed made history at a premier life science project in San Diego by fabricating and installing what SMACNA considers the largest ductwork ever, measuring 248” x 142”. Our BIM team worked hand-in-hand with SMACNA and the engineer to ensure these large systems operate at the highest quality. After fabrication and installation, SMACNA reviewed its records and found the ductwork was the largest ever fabricated.

A.O. Reed’s in-house sheet metal shop fabricated this record-breaking duct system. The duct riser consisted of 14-gauge galvanized steel weighing 1,600 pounds per joint. Overall, we fabricated about 24,000 pounds of galvanized steel roof duct on this system alone. Our team of welders, journeymen, technicians, and apprentices meticulously fabricated these pieces of ductwork to ensure we provided the highest-quality product for the project.

A.O. Reed employs the largest number of Union Trade Employees in San Diego County. We have signatory status with the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union in Southern California and the Sheet Metal International Union in the U.S. and Canada. On average, our general foremen and foremen have been at A.O. Reed for over twenty years. A.O. Reed is the only mechanical contractor in San Diego that fabricates our ductwork. This advantage gives us the unique ability to modify our fabrication process and adjust to the different idiosyncrasies of the job. Our team finds new and inventive ways to overcome obstacles in the field. At A.O. Reed, we have some of the best fabricators in our industry. Utilizing our team’s skills and expertise, we made history! Our team produces high-quality products for our clients. With the help of our journeymen, apprentices, and technicians, we can provide the best mechanical systems in Southern California.

This record is a great achievement in our celebration of 110 years of business. From starting as a small plumbing business in 1914 to being one of Southern California's most reputable mechanical contracting companies, we are grateful for our customers’ and employees’ support in continued success.
