UCSD Altman
UCSD Altman Clinical & Translational Research Institute is an 8-story translational research facility with 3 stories below street level (including a below grade loading dock) and 4 stories above street level. This 354,000 Sq. Ft. building included wet and dry research labs, laboratory research spaces, a vivarium, clinical research areas, multiple conference halls and offices, lecture halls, auditoriums, and a café. The project also included a central plant: 1.3-million-gallon thermal energy storage tank, hot water, and steam boilers.
UCSD facilities remained in full operation during construction. The mechanical and plumbing systems involved a high degree of technical complexity. A.O. Reed was responsible for mechanical and plumbing scopes of work. Mechanical scope of work included VAV systems/AHU’s, boilers (heating and steam), heat recovery chiller, chilled beams, lab exhaust, radiant heating, and variable airflow by Phoenix controls. Plumbing scope included waste and vent, industrial hot and cold-water lab gases (nitrogen, compressed air, vacuum, and deionized water.)
This design assist project achieved LEED Silver.
