Keiller Leadership Academy

The Keiller Leadership Academy is part of the San Diego Unified School District. Keiller Leadership Academy was originally named after Annie B. Keiller, a revolutionary teacher in the late 19th century who constantly progressed her teaching methods for the better. This is a very similar strategy the school is embracing as well. In 2005, the school failed to meet the federal law’s test standards and was forced to restructure. Only two schools had positive results from the restructuring program, and Keiller was one of them. Refocusing teaching strategies and becoming a charter school helped save it from failing. Since then, Keiller is constantly coming up with new strategies to teach their students efficiently. It is no surprise the internal transformation would soon turn into an external transformation. This project started on June 3rd, 2021. A.O. Reed was awarded the piping and mechanical scopes for the twelve-classroom renovation project.

The project had two phases. The first phase included the renovation of multiple buildings and the second included construction of a two-story building. The first phase was a retrofit project to the four existing buildings: the administrative, auditorium, gymnasium, and library. The administrative building was a 4,433 square-foot building. A.O. Reed installed two rooftop heat pump packaged units and replaced the exposed rooftop ductwork. We also installed four new exhaust fans in the redesigned restrooms. Modifications were made to the existing heat pump unit to accommodate the new nurse’s office. A.O. Reed renovated the 5,249 square-foot auditorium. The original building only had space gas heaters. The existing heaters were removed, and five rooftop package heat pump units were installed with exposed interior ductwork. In the gymnasium, A.O. Reed installed two ductless split systems in the head coach’s office. The 3,935 square-foot library added a 25-ton chiller. This was installed and connected to the existing hydronic cooling coil to the air handler.

The second phase included the construction of a 21,436 square-foot, two-story building. A.O. Reed installed twelve rooftop package heat pump systems through roof-concealed overhead ductwork. An exhaust system was installed for the restrooms. Three ductless split systems were installed in the computer rooms and elevator rooms.

Keiller Leadership Academy’s focus is to bring high-quality education to students in lower-income areas. The school partners with universities, high schools, and nearby businesses to introduce the students to a promising future. A.O. Reed is proud to revamp the school’s external appearance to reflect the internal programs at the Keiller Leadership Academy.
