Marriott Gaslamp - Chiller Replacement
A.O. Reed is proud to provide service for the Marriott Gaslamp, a valued client relationship that led to the opportunity to deliver a successful cross-sell project in our construction sector to replace the hotel's aging rooftop chillers.
The existing chillers were nearing the end of their service life and required replacement to ensure reliable cooling for hotel guests and operations. Located on the hotel's rooftop overlooking San Diego's iconic Petco Park, the project presented unique logistical challenges. Due to the equipment's proximity to surrounding streets, neighboring businesses, and the stadium, the replacement required a carefully coordinated crane lift and temporary street closure.
As a design-build renovation, the project demonstrated A.O. Reed’s ability to plan, coordinate, and execute a complex installation in a highly visible urban environment. The client requested that the existing chillers be removed, replaced, and commissioned in less than one week. A.O. Reed exceeded expectations by completing the replacement and startup in just four days, minimizing disruption and returning the system to operation ahead of schedule. The remaining scope includes finalizing the chiller controls integration and completing testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) of the pumping systems to optimize overall system performance.
The rooftop crane operation required a temporary street closure, which involved extensive permitting, traffic control planning, and coordination with local agencies. A.O. Reed secured all required permits and completed the necessary preconstruction planning to ensure a safe and efficient lift. Thanks to this preparation and the close coordination between our field team and crane operators, the existing chillers were removed, and the new units were installed more quickly than anticipated. Completing the lift ahead of schedule reduced labor hours, resulting in cost savings for the client.
By leveraging our existing relationship with the Marriott Gaslamp, we successfully delivered a seamless cross-sell solution that included replacing the rooftop chillers and associated chilled water piping to the nearest isolation valves. The project was completed safely, efficiently, and ahead of schedule while meeting the client's operational requirements.
With the new chiller system in place, the Marriott Gaslamp is better positioned to provide reliable comfort for its guests while improving the long-term performance and efficiency of its mechanical systems.
