Wilson Middle School

Wilson Middle School has grown extensively since its opening in 1915. The school aims to regularly update its teaching methods to reflect the growing digital environment and accommodate students from diverse backgrounds. To keep up with the changing environment, the school executed a redevelopment project in 2019. This 150,000 square-foot project reconstructed the existing structure to build a new modern campus. Overall the project renovated and constructed seven buildings on campus, including an administrative building, two classrooms, a food service building, an art building, a performance art building, and a parking structure.

Wilson Middle School was among the numerous projects that served the San Diego Unified School District’s redevelopment plan. Recently, A.O. Reed was awarded projects from various schools to reconstruct the campuses and provide updated structures for the students in San Diego to flourish.

In the Wilson Middle School project, a unique mechanical system was installed in two larger classroom buildings called “natural ventilation.” Our team installed a ducted chimney in each classroom with a fan on the roof controlled by a thermostat. Once the temperature hit 72 degrees, the fan would exhaust the classroom and open the windows automatically to bring in the fresh air. The system is designed to automatically draw the heat up to the chimney on a hot day. The “natural ventilation” system is on a timed setup and shuts down at night. This is designed to be innovative and energy efficient.

All systems are standard package units. Each classroom had its own independent unit on the roof. The administrative buildings are fed by a VAV system where A.O.Reed had one unit on the roof and a boiler to control and feed the VAV boxes. Each VAV had a thermostat to control the temperature in each office. To serve the kitchen utilities, A.O. Reed installed exhaust and grease ducts.

Wilson Middle School educates its students to have a bright future. Wilson provides their students with an advanced art and technology program to prepare them for future milestones and educational achievements. The school has a state-of-the-art theatre with a high-tech sound and lighting system. The school provides dedicated staff to educate the students for a promising future. The project was completed on July 23rd, 2021.
